In your pregnancy, week 7 symptoms will be reasonably the same as the former 6 weeks. These symptoms are very similar during the first 13 weeks of your pregnancy, otherwise known as your first trimester.

You may have morning sickness if you haven’t already. You will likewise get swollen and sore breasts, much like you have just before your monthly period.

By now, you’ve probably experienced that unpleasant bloating, the bothersome frequent urination, extreme fatigue and you’ve most likely missed one, if not two periods. That may sound comical, but my aunt, who was very big at the time, never missed a period during her pregnancy and never tested positive, didn’t recognize she was pregnant until she delivered her firsborn in the toilet!! What a surprise that was! True story!

You may feel more attached with your new fetus this week, this is due to the fact that the umbilical cord is now formed and feeding your new baby with much required oxygen and nutrients to formulate properly. Remember, if you’re still experiencing morning sickness to add at least 300 more calories per day to your diet.

Last week, your baby’s brain and nervous system started to grow, this week the two hemispheres of the brain begin to take shape likewise. Now, the digestive tract starts to grow with the first appearance of the liver, pancreas and appendix.

The “buds” which are the beginnings of legs and arms are now developing into small paddlelike webs. Next week, the fingers and toes begin to take shape. Likewise, the eyelid folds are formed protecting the eyes, and your cherished baby has doubled in size from last week. It’s now the whopping size of a blueberry!

Continue eating healthy for you and the baby and abstain from junk foods, cigarettes, alcohol and recreational drugs. You both want to be healthy and strong as the pregnancy week 7 symptoms continue.

During pregnancy week 6, the gestational age is 5 weeks which means it would be between 36 and 42 days since the last menstruation. The embryonic age would be 3 weeks or between 22 and 28 days from date of fertilisation. At pregnancy week 6, the embryo begins to curve into a C shape and measures approximately 1/8 inch or 4 mm in length, though this can vary between 2 and 5 mm! The grooves that form the face and neck structures become evident – these are called branchial arches. Rudimentary ears – called the otic pits start to form and the heart develops further by bulging and beats with a rhythm, between 100 and 140 beats per minute. This may be picked up only on the ultrasound machine at this stage, but will become more audible within the next few weeks. Arm buds make an appearance along with a tail and the rudiments of the mouth form with the membrane rupturing at that point. Pregnancy week 6 will be indicated by the neural tube closing and the primordial lungs beginning to form, together with the future liver, gall bladder and pancreas. The urinary passage and the rectal passage separate, ureteric buds appear along with the spleen. Anterior and posterior horns in the spinal chord can now be differentiated quite clearly during pregnancy week 6. Dark spots form where the eyes and nose will eventually take shape.

During pregnancy week 6 the mother may show some weight gain – between 1 to 5 pounds, though there are many women who experience weight loss during the first trimester due to ‘morning sickness’ and the nausea associated with it tends to put off the appetite. The resultant weight loss in a woman with body mass within the ideal limits should not be allowed to increase substantially as it may cause complications later on in the pregnancy. Severe forms of morning sickness may require hospitalisation. Pregnancy week 6 usually results in a thicker waist and if there is any spotting (of blood) consulting the doctor or healthcare professional is advisable as it may indicate concerns. The breasts become tender and the uterus starts growing in size – to that of a plum. Diet during this period should be normal, though a few additional calories are fine. However, the notion that the mother needs to eat for two persons throughout the pregnancy is incorrect; an additional 300 calories per day during the second trimester is good enough and this is does not mean eating a lot – as one bagel contains about the 300 calories. Once the morning sickness wears off, appetite and even hunger replace it – to prevent overeating, several small meals throughout the day is advisable and they should have high fibre content. Fibre makes the person feel full for a longer period and also prevents a common side effect of pregnancy from becoming severe – constipation! A healthy diet including lots of fruits and nuts as well as yoghurt should be the norm during pregnancy week 6.

The changes in Mother and foetus are significant at this stage of pregnancy week 6. The mother must be selective about her diet and be comfortable with all the changes. Planning ahead you can prepare for your child by getting “Free Baby Stuff” at

Pregnancy Week 14

Pregnancy week 14 would mean that the gestational age would be 13 weeks and the embryo’s age 11 weeks. By this time the foetus would have grown to between 3.5 to 6 inches (or 9 to 15 cms.) and would weigh around 1.5 ounces (or 40 gms). Muscle tissue and bones would have started forming with the bones already gaining in hardness. The skin is almost transparent and the head is partly covered by fine hair. Active movements, including sucking action in the mouth can be observed. Fluid is secreted from the liver and pancreas as also the intestine. The body length starts catching up with that of the head and the ears as well as eyes are moving to their correct positions on the face. A neck is clearly discernible, which lifts the chin off the chest and the reflexes are more rapid.

At pregnancy week 14, the nutrition for the growing foetus is completely supplied by the mother, through the placental wall, so it is extremely important that the woman does not eat, touch, breathe or otherwise ingest anything that can be harmful to the embryo. These include sprays, smoke, cleaning agents, questionable food preservatives, alcohol and seemingly innocuous things like changing pet’s litter boxes and gardening – things that can result in bacterial and viral infections from contaminated faeces or soil and equipment.

The mother starts developing a pouch below the stomach and the pregnancy becomes quite obvious to others. Constipation is usual during pregnancy week 14 and is usually caused by the increased intake of iron through supplements and in the diet. Constipation can lead to or aggravate haemorrhoids, so it helps if you have a lot of fluids, especially water and eat food with high fibre content. As in all things, there should be moderation, because too much fibre can lead to gas formation – a very uncomfortable condition during pregnancy. Since pregnancy week 14 means you have just entered the 2nd trimester, it is necessary to your and the foetus’s well being that you start to regularly exercise, especially those moves that help in the pregnancy. Women usually feel energetic enough during this period, though it must be cautioned that any exercise regime must be cleared by your physician, as there is every chance that some exercises have the potential to damage parts of your body and adversely affect the foetus inside the placenta. Women tend to put on weight during pregnancy week 14 and some tend to diet during this period; however, this is to be strictly avoided as it will reduce the flow of essential nutrients to the foetus leading to malnourishment, complicated delivery and low birth weight of the baby. An additional 300 to 500 calories needs to be taken by the mother exclusively for the unborn baby from pregnancy week 14 and a total calorie intake of 2000 to 2400 should be more than enough for its proper growth and development. However, it is important not to over eat and keep things in perspective even if there is a craving!
