It is a misconception in majority of the population that if you get pregnant once you have no problem next time.

Secondary infertility is a common problem that can be heartbreaking for many couples. Once you have had a child, you normally think that getting pregnant again should be no problem; after all, haven’t you proven your fertility?

Fertility is a function of age. It starts to decline at age 27, and the most pronounced decline is above age 40.Unfortunately, there’s no test that shows when fertility starts to decline.

Secondary infertility means that couple has at least one biological child but are having difficulty in conceiving for the second time. Twenty percent of women experience a condition called secondary infertility. Even for a healthy couple with no reproductive problems it can take time to conceive. However, such problems can be avoided if you are careful about your body. Read about what you can do to prevent secondary infertility.

Secondary infertility may happen at any time and the causes are almost identical to those of primary infertility. The problem can lie with the woman’s reproductive system, the man’s reproductive system, or with both partners.

Many womens dont have any problems getting pregnant for the first time. So they never believe trying for a second child would be an issue. However, even after trying for more then a year if someone is not able to conceive,a visit to the infertility specialists is must.The biggest step in coping with the problem is deciding that a person needs some help this time. A trip to the doctor may result in women undergoing number of tests. The outcome may be secondary infertility.

About 20% of couples who wish to conceive do so within a month. During each subsequent month, about 20% of the remaining couples conceive, so that there is about an 85% chance of conceiving within six months. A physician will generally initiate a medical evaluation only if a couple has not conceived after one year of trying, or, if the woman is over 35, after six months. About one in seven couples have problems conceiving. The percentage of couples experiencing secondary infertility in particular is not known because some couples do not seek medical help.

Why do I have secondary infertility?

There are many reasons why you can have secondary infertility. These reasons are often the same reasons why couples experience primary infertility. See a fertility specialist to try and help diagnose your secondary infertility but some common reasons for secondary infertility include:

* ovulation problems
* uterine fibroids
* endometriosis
* you or your husband/partner got an infection since your last pregnancy
* you or your husband/partner gained weight
* you or your husband/partner changed your diet
* egg or embryo quality has changed
* sperm issues are now present – sperm count, morphology, motility, etc…

There are many reasons you can have secondary infertility. Your lifestyle can be a huge factor in your fertility so check first to see if you have made any lifestyle changes that might be affection your fertility.

There are several factors mentioned below contributing to the Secondary Infertility and which can be controlled by you.

Unavoidable factor in todays life-stress

Stress can be a major factor in trying to get pregnant. The stress hormone cortisol interferes with ovulation, leading to decreased fertility. In addition, stress can also cause elevated blood pressure and other conditions, which can create complications in a pregnancy. Research has shown that 77 percent of women who were able to reduce their levels of cortisol succeeded in restoring their ovulation abilities.

Reducing stress can be done in different ways. Generally, reducing stress hormone levels involves a change in diet and exercising. Meditation has also proved effective as a stress buster. Many doctors may also recommend taking a short vacation to rejuvenate your body.

Fertile period.

The fertile period during the monthly cycle in a women decreases with the increase in the age.Finding fertile period every month becomes a priority because
the egg released the ovary remains fertile only for around 12 hours or so.Ovulation kit or ovulation stick is used to determine when a person is ovulating.

Age and the fertility.

Fertility decreases with the age It is an accepted medical fact that the chances of female not conceiving or infertility in women is higher once she is 30 years old. It is not common with all.In most cases decreased fertility does not hamper a woman’s chances of getting pregnant, especially if she has been pregnant before. However, some women do experience the problem of infertility, termed as secondary infertility. This is more common in women who have had their first child after the age of 30. Many treatments are available to overcome this stage.

Complete Medical checkup.

Couples under the age of 35 when they fail to conceive after trying for more then a year should consult a specialist and undergo a complete check up.For women over 35, the waiting period is six months.The basic test includes Pap smear test to check for abnormalities in the uterus and ovaries and a three-day FSH/estradiol blood test to measure the level of FSH or follicle-stimulating hormone,which is responsible for release of eggs from the ovary.High levels of the hormone indicate that body is working more to stimulate your ovaries.

Additional help of vitamins.
Iron and folic acid is very good to improve the fertility.Available in the form of multivitamin tablets,it is taken in addition to the regular meals.The use of this increases the chances of a successful conception and also prevents the baby inside from suffering certain birth defects.

Unlike those couples who have never had a child, those couples going through secondary infertility find it hard to get support from their network of friends and family.

The good news is that secondary infertility can be treated just like primary infertility. If you suspect you have a fertility problem, get checked out. The sooner you find out the problem, the sooner you can get back on track to having your second, third or forth child.

Increase Pregnancy Chances There has been heard a dramatic increase of fertility matters over the past twenty years. These days, more and more couples are having to resort to fertility treatments to help them get pregnant. Many factors can be equated to the cause of infertility, yet the most common cause of infertility is ‘unexplained’, which in layman’s term means that doctors are unable to point to a specific medical problem at root. But if a couple is unable to conceive no matter how hard they try, then there is obviously something causing the problem and taking a natural approach may be helpful. The answer lies in taking a deeper look at lifestyle factors, nutritional deficiencies and even emotional elements. Studies have shown that couples who have made a shift in their lifestyles, diet and took nutritional supplements have increased their success of conceiving by 80%. I will highlight the most important points in ensuring your success in getting pregnant but you’ll need to know that it takes at least three months for oocytes (immature eggs) to mature enough to be released during ovulation. It also takes three months for sperm cells to develop. This means that you’ll need a four month (pre-conception) period of following these steps before you’ll see any success in conceiving. DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS A healthy diet is crucial to a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby. A proper diet can help to correct hormone imbalances that may be affecting your ability to conceive. Certain food and drinks are known to lower fertility. Increase Pregnancy Chances A) ALCOHOL Alcohol will affect both men and women. Drinking any alcohol at all will reduce your fertility chances by half and the more you drink, the less likely you are to conceive. Drinking alcohol also causes a decrease in sperm count, an increase in abnormal sperm and a lower proportion of motile sperm. Alcohol also inhibits the body’s absorption of nutrients such as zinc, which is one of the most important minerals for male fertility. You should try to eliminate alcohol from your diet for at least three months. B) CAFFEINE Caffeine, especially in the form of coffee, will decrease fertility. Drinking a cup of coffee a day can halve your chances of conceiving. It is important to eliminate all caffeine containing food and drinks during the pre-conception period. This includes colas, chocolate and coffee among other things. C) XENOESTROGENS Xenoestrogens are essentially environmental estrogens, which comes from pesticides and plastics. When you are trying to conceive, one of the most important thing you need to do is to avoid xenoestrogens and the best way to do so is to buy organic products especially during the pre-conception period.

One of the most overlooked roadblocks to conceiving is psychological stress. Infertility is aggravated by lifestyle factors, but stress itself can interfere with the balanced release of hormones required for the production and release of a mature egg. Male fertility is affected by stress as well. Although studies have not examined the effect of stress on sperm production and sperm count, it is known that impotence and difficulty ejaculating can be caused by emotional distress.

Click HERE to Instantly Download Diana Farrell’s Pregnancy Success Guide.

Unlike other causes of infertility, stress is like a ball rolling downhill – it gains momentum over time. The inability to conceive causes more stress among couples, which in turn aggravates infertility, and so on, resulting in a vicious cycle. This is why managing stress should take just as much priority as finding ways to treat your infertility, as the two factors are integral.

The science behind stress and infertility

Existing research on the relationship between stress and infertility presents a lot of compelling evidence.

When you are confronted by a “fight or flight” situation, your body produces a hormone called cortisol as a response to stress. Small doses of cortisol can actually bring some positive effects – it heightens your memory, makes you less sensitive to pain, and gives you a quick burst of energy for your survival. If the source of stress is constant, levels of cortisol keep on climbing, interfering with functions of the hypothalamus, the region of the brain that produces sex hormones.

Until recently, the effect of stress hormones on fertility was only a theory. But, in June 2009, researchers from the University of California Berkeley found new evidence showing how cortisol interferes with the function of the sex hormone gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). When there are low levels of GnRH, low sperm count, irregular ovulation, and sexual dysfunction occur. According to the findings, cortisol has a double-whammy effect on fertility. Not only does it inhibit the effects of GnRH; cortisol also increases the levels of another hormone called gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH). As you can tell by the name, GnIH aggravates infertility by preventing the release of gonadotropins. Although these findings were based on experiments in rats, the conclusions have opened the door to further research on the subject and new ways of thinking about infertility.

Boost your fertility with stress management programs

The effects of stress on fertility may vary from couple to couple, but studies seem unanimous on their conclusion that it’s easier to conceive when you’re under less stress. A paper in the journal Human Reproduction provides evidence that pregnancy is unlikely during months when the couples report feeling anxious or stressed. Conversely, the likelihood of pregnancy increased during months when couples reported feeling happy.

Stress can also affect the success rates of artificial reproductive technologies like in vitro fertilization. In a study published in Fertility and Sterility, researchers observed that women with high stress levels released 20% less eggs during ovulation than women with low stress levels. Those who were more stressed were also less likely to have a successful pregnancy.

So when you are trying to become pregnant, you have nothing to lose by spending more time relaxing. Unwind after work with a massage, sign up for a yoga class, or attend a stress management program. Harvard Medical School’s Mind-Body Institute shows that 57% of infertile women became pregnant 6 months after taking a 10-week mind-body program.

Pregnant After Miscarriage

Your dreams and hopes were shattered when your doctor conscience you that you have a miscarriage. It’s difficult to arrive to terms through your pregnancy loss. You are perhaps feeling guilty and are blaming yourself for the pregnancy loss. One of my friends who had a miscarriage told me that she didn’t get over her pregnancy loss until she was pregnant again.

So when can you try getting pregnant after miscarriage. Your doctor may advise waiting up to three months but actually there is no reason to wait unless you have health problems. You are probably worrying that you may have miscarriage again if you get pregnant. Most women does not have problem getting pregnant after miscarriage and most carry their pregnancy to full-term. A minority of them may experience recurrent miscarriages. Cause Of Miscarriage or Recurrent Miscarriage You are probably still wondering what causes your miscarriage.

Your doctor may not be able to give you a definite answer.

1. Chromosomal Abnormalities Most miscarriages which occur in the early part of your pregnancy are caused by chromosomal problems within the fetus. After your egg and sperm meet, numerous changes occur before a fetus can be formed. Mistakes in the chromosomes can happen resulting in miscarriage. Usually these chromosomal abnormalities are caused by random errors and are non-recurrent. Most women are able to have healthy pregnancy after miscarriage. In rare cases. the chromosomal abnormalities are passed on to the fetus by one of the parents. In this case, the woman will continue to have recurrent miscarriages until she or her partner is treated.

2. Lifestyle Factors Smoking, consuming alcohol and taking illegal drugs increase your risk of miscarriage. If you want to have a healthy pregnancy and for the sake of your unborn baby, you should stop doing these activities. If you have difficulty discontinuing these activities, you may want to consult your doctor.

3. Low Progesterone Level When you are pregnant, your body secretes progesterone which thickens the lining of the uterus to support the pregnancy. If your progesterone level is too low, your egg cannot implant properly in the uterus and miscarriage occurs. Your doctor can do a simple blood test to test your progesterone level. If your progesterone level is too low, you will have to take the progesterone supplement prescribed by your doctor.

4. Incompetent Cervix This is a condition when the cervix opens too soon during pregnancy and result in miscarriage. This usually happens after 12 weeks of pregnancy when the fetus puts more weight on the cervix. Your doctor may recommend placing a stitch through the cervix to strengthen your cervix and prevent later pregnancy loss. Pregnant After Miscarriage

5. Uterine Problems Uterine fibroids, uterine polyps, scar tissues in the uterine due to Asherman’s syndrome or abnormal shaped uterus can result in miscarriage.

6. Medical Conditions Some medical disorders like pelvic infection, diabetes, insulin resistance syndrome, thyroid disease, thrombophilia, lupus and antiphospholipid syndrome may increase your risk of early pregnancy loss. If you have any of these disorders, work with your doctors to ensure your condition is under control before planning to get pregnant.

7. Ectopic Pregnancy An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the embryo implants and grows at the wrong place, very often in the fallopian tube. If the embryo is left to grow within the fallopian tube, the tube will rupture causing severe haemorrhage and miscarriage. The tube will then have to be removed. Therefore, etopic pregnancy normally has to be ended if discovered early.

Symptoms of A Miscarriage The common symptoms of a miscarriage are abdominal cramping or vagina bleeding. Light bleeding or spotting is fairly common in early pregnancy as the fertilized egg implants onto the wall of the womb.
